ANNUAL APPEAL
With the Burnt Island Lighthouse Bicentennial behind us, it's time to set our sights on new goals for next year.

Restoration of the tower and lantern room
The granite blocks, harvested from the island, may look good from afar, but under the thick layer of stucco, the 195-year-old mortar has crumbled; its lantern room and spiral stairs have rusted; and its interior brick liner is in need of repair. This deterioration needs to be stopped immediately and measures need to be taken to preserve what is left and to replace what is too far gone.
Preservation of the Keeper's Dwelling
In 1857, the original granite dwelling was replaced by today's wooden structure. With the support of several grantors, donators, and many volunteers, the dwelling's interior was historically restored to the 1950's era. A new roof and new chimney have been completed. For the past 15 years, thousands of visitors have enjoyed meeting the Muise Family in this dwelling, as part of the Living Lighthouse Program. Today, the rotting pine clapboards are being held together with wood filler and paint, and the house rests on a foundation that lacks mortar between its blocks, and windows need to be replaced. These conditions need to be corrected soon.
Solarization of the Education Center
After the U.S Coast Guard solarized the lighthouse and foghorn, they transferred ownership of the submarine cable to Burnt Island. Unfortunately, its life span may be coming to an end. The cable needs to be replaced with a solarized system for a more permanent supply of electricity for the island.
